It is pretty important you have a patient boss/mentor who is willing to share his/her knowledge while also guiding you to grow professionally.
You are lucky if you find such people to lead you. I should say, I have been lucky in that front not just once but twice. Once when I started my career after under-graduation and now, while I am halfway through my post-graduation and almost ready to re-start my career.
It is a rarity that you would work for one boss your entire career. The tasks you get might not always be interesting. Or they might not always pose a learning opportunity, which would prompt you for a shift. While it is not fair in some cases to let go of the job that gave you a great career beginning, there are various factors other than the ones above, involved in the decision of job shift. When I made my first job shift, I did not leave my boss, I left the company!!
When you are at a new job, apart from applying your acquired technical knowledge, you are ALWAYS a fresher. You start from scratch. And while you are at it, you involuntarily try to draw parallels between your current boss and a previous boss who was your favorite. I do! Looks like I no longer have ‘a’ boss monopolizing my favorite category and that it is time to make a list. To learn something.. takes a considerable effort. But, to teach something you know, to willingly give away your knowledge and tricks, takes much more. And, that is what a good lead would do.
Now that my internship is starting to wrap up, I cannot but feel gratitude for the opportunity I got to work under a great leadership. All that I am, I owe to my first boss. And all that I am going to be, I owe to my first boss AND my boss during this internship!!
To all those who had/have such bosses, enjoy learning and be ever grateful!
