I am a Twilight fan! And I do not feel bad about disclosing it.
This might be because this was the first book “series” I started reading. I got fascinated by the books in multi volumes that I kept reading only series for a long while.
It was one of my friends, who during a casual chat told me about this new book that she had started reading. She did not fail to mention about the super cool hero and that the most girls loved the books. That sparked interest in me and so I caved in and started reading the franchise.
Of course, to the one novice as me then in the field of reading books, Twilight certainly was a good read. Who would not want an all perfect guy who absolutely dotes on you, adores you and loves you for as long as he lives!? For, is it not what your ultimate desire is about your other half!? Well, it is a different case for Bella that this particular all gorgeous hero is an otherworldly dreamboat guy, who never ages. While I can understand the strong dislike of certain characters, or the books or the films, the absolute extreme hatred that people exhibit right at the mention of its name is puzzling. Why such intense loathing?!
Yes, the heroine Bella is portrayed as a pathetic, plain and an average human. All she does is attracted by the inhuman beauties, chase after them creating trouble for herself and all around her. Having somebody pathetic playing the role in the film added the fuel to the fire. I absolutely am, in the “Kristen” haters club, but definitely not in the Bella haters’ club.
And here is the reason why. Why do you want to compare Bella with other kick-ass heroines!? I don’t see people complaining much about the heroes of those kick-ass-heroine novels to be a pathetic and a lame creatures. When somebody does not feel the need to complain about the less macho heroes of some strong female protagonists’ stories, I do not find it bad about a female lead to be so very feminine and dependent on the male lead. She was not all pathetic right from her birth. She had been able to take care of herself and manage to grow up to be a decent teenager brought up by a hare-brained mother. Later when an all gorgeous guy shows up and behaves head over heels for her, in a place which she absolutely dislikes, she sunk herself into the comforts offered to her. As simple as that.
But during every re-read of the books, I do find some instances troubling. Like how Bella and Edward just magically fell for each other. Bella falls for beauty. And Edward seems to be attracted to her just by the fact that he is not able to “hear” her thoughts. There is nothing at all romantic about that. But Midnight Sun clears some of the air in this regard. Edward has an undeniable thirst for Bella’s blood just as any vampire would. But eventually falls for Bella after learning about her selflessness, her disinterest in anything that would generally interest the girls of her age. One must like the unusual, don’t they? ๐ I don’t know about others. But that has been my trait ever. Liking towards the unusual, unique, that which is not within reach. That which seems interesting to you, but not others, is exclusive to you. Its all yours ๐
People differ and so are their perception towards everything. Some would consider me a feminist considering my take on few aspects of life. I wouldn’t admit it, neither would I deny. To me, a girl should be independent. She should be able to lead her life without anybody forcing their thoughts trying to influence her. But I would like to differ slightly when it comes to my liking towards the whole story of Twilight Saga.
Everybody needs pampering. Everybody needs comfort. At least once in a while, if not always. And Edward gives them all to Bella, always and forever. And this quality makes him likable and makes me feel I can be in Bella’s shoes to experience it, without anybody’s hatred touching me.
Yes.. I am a Twilight fan and would forever be. :):)
